Mini, Maxi, Midi.

Last week here in my sweet city was Austin Fashion Week. FashionXAustin has been putting on the event for eight years now, and each year gets more fabulous.

This year I was able to attend the first night of runway shows which featured 8 designer collections (some by past Project Runway stars!) and 7 capsule collections.

Trying to figure out what to wear to this shindig was not easy. Between wanting to make a good impression, but not wanting to appear over the top, I think I pulled out everything in my closet. The one piece I kept coming back to was my midi knit pencil skirt from Old Navy. It literally goes with everything!

I joke a lot about my “big ol’ country girl legs”, but really it’s one of the areas about which I am most insecure. I’m a curvy woman. But, you see, I wasn’t always. Until I was in my mid-20’s, I was a beanpole- average height, but veeeeery slender.

Learning to dress my new curvier figure didn’t always come easy, especially in skirts. My legs feel too bulky for short skirts, but I’m also easily overwhelmed by all the fabric in maxis. My solution: the midi skirt. The midi hits right below my knee- the narrowest part of my leg- and shows off my curvy legs nicely instead of making me look awkward. It’s a length that’s flattering on almost everyone.

Once I settled on that, the rest was easy. I wanted my vibe to be a little funky and a little classy. Very Austin. Paired with the skirt was an oversized cap sleeve ballet pink sweater also from Old Navy, fringe suede boots, and an oversized tote.

Once I got to the red carpet at the event, there was So. Much. Black. I was so glad I had a little bit of color to brighten things up.

The show was incredible, and the designs were gorgeous. Every designer brought something truly unique. Stay tuned, there’s more to come about what was on the runway!
