Breaking the Fashion Rules

A while back I published a post about wearing clashing colors, specifically red and pink. Today I’m continuing with my “Breaking the Fashion Rules” series with pairing up black and brown.

We’ve all heard the rules: No White after Labor Day. Blue and green must never be seen. Bags should always match your shoes or belt… That’s stoopid! 😉

I truly believe that personal style comes about when you throw away the rules and are free to dress how your heart leads you. Want to overload on the jewelry? Then be known for it! Do you think there’s a sneaker for every outfit? Then make it work!

Me? I’m a rebel, Dottie. I enjoy dancing to my own tune. And I want to help you find your fashion confidence as well.

I honestly don’t know how the rule against black and brown together was started. But I sure don’t follow it. Done correctly the brown/ black contrast can be gorgeous.

Colorblocking- which is wearing big blocks of color- is a very easy way of pairing colors together. I love colorful prints, though. Just think of all those wonderful animal prints. And marble. And granite. Even nature is filled with mixed colors and patterns!

Swiss Dot Black Sheer Blouse

Here I’ve paired this stunning sheer black swiss-dot blouse with brown and gold beaded necklaces, brown jeweled pumps from Poetic Licence (My absolute favorite shoe brand! They’re like works of art on your feet!), and a brown snake print clutch. The warmth of all the browns nicely balances the cool of the black.

You might recognize the jeans from this post I did on raw-edge jeans. This is the pair I picked from New York & Company, and I love them! They’re exactly what I was looking for- ankle length, slightly distressed, and very comfy.

This had to be some of the most fun I’ve had on a photo shoot. My husband is so supportive of the blog and all the side projects I’ve got going on, so he’s usually the one behind the camera. At this particular location, we were shooting in front of an old red barn with three longhorns grazing in front of it. I went to sit on a chain fence so that we could get the barn in the background, found out that the chain wasn’t secure, fell straight on my bottom in the wet, muddy grass, and kept shooting!

What do you think about the black and brown mix? Does it break rules for you?
